A Long Way from Anywhere is the story of Wake in Fright. It is the first book to tell the complete saga behind the making of a film that many believe to be the best movie ever made in Australia. Directed by Ted Kotcheff and released in 1971 Wake in Fright is based on the best-selling critically acclaimed novel by Kenneth Cook and stars Donald Pleasence, Gary Bond, Sylvia Kay, Chips Rafferty and Jack Thompson.
Based on hundreds of new interviews, informed by research unique to the project and drawing from little seen material from archives in France, Norway, Poland, Canada, the USA, the UK, and Australia, A Long Way from Anywhere is a biography of a film.
Intimate, detailed, funny and heartbreaking it is about the times that shaped a classic film and the lives of those who made it. It is the story of Australia in the 1960s, a special moment when the nation began to challenge its myths, and shake off its isolation. Wake in Fright created alarm and controversy and inspired a generation of artists.
A Long Way from Anywhere is the story of how it happened and why what it says is still important half a century later.
ABOUT PETER GALVIN
Peter Galvin is a writer and filmmaker from Sydney Australia. Peter's journalism, essays and criticism on cinema and movie making has been published in major newspapers including The Age, the Australian and the Sydney Morning Herald and in many magazines including Cinema Papers, Filmnews, Metro, Encore, Inside Film and Filmink. Peter's broadcasts have been heard on ABC Radio and he has written reviews and features for SBS Movies. Peter has scripted commissioned screenplays for Film Australia, Southern Star and Screentime. Peter has written, produced and directed a number of shorts and TVCs. Peter Galvin was one of the foundation teachers for the original Sydney Film School and was Program Director for Popcorn Taxi, a year-round meet the filmmaker film festival. Peter is looking forward to sharing his new work A Long Way from Anywhere ~ The Story of Wake in Fright.
